“Dammit, girl!” Ben called out as he threw the pitchfork down to the ground and lunged towards me. “You scared the shit out of me. Why in the hell are you creeping up on people?” He grabbed my arms and pulled me upwards to examine my injury. “Damn,” he muttered under his breath.
“Stop! Let go of me,” I cried out, trying to forcefully shove him away with the heels of my palms. Each movement I made only made him hold on tighter.
“You're bleeding.” He kept his hands wrapped around my upper arms, ignoring my protests and squirms. He didn't back down.
“Get away from me!” I lifted my knee and kicked at him.
“Will you hold still?” he yelled sternly.
I froze, looking up at him with wide eyes.
     “Christ,” he muttered in annoyance.

In this scene, Juliana wakes up in a stranger's house.

Outside of the room, I could hear the muffled sounds of someone talking. I sat up on the bunk attempting to listen, though I could not make out any of their words. Soon after, the handle on the door began to wiggle. I snatched a long metal candleholder off of the nightstand next to the bed, clutching it in front of me for protection. Just in case.
“Oh, good morning!” The stranger beamed at me from the doorway. As she smiled, dimples etched into her rosy cheeks.
Still holding my weapon close to my body, I examined the child's stance and concluded that she was no threat. Slightly lowering my weapon, she turned and shouted through the door. “She's awake!”

In this scene, Juliana and her boyfriend had recently been in an argument. Juliana has a 'friend' named Ben (a little backstory here: Ben is a spirit with whom she grew up with, though everyone is under the belief that she suffers from a certain mental disorder and tries to medicate her. As a result, she's a bit down on herself; spiraling her into the abusive relationship she has with her fiancé). At this point in the story, Ben is forcing her to get out, leading her on a snowy, cold adventure.

I'm going to freeze to death out here, thanks to you.” I told Ben. There was no response; only the humming buzz of crickets to answer me. “Oh, so you've got nothing to say now? Are you just going to let me die out here? Was this part of your big plan, huh?”
“You're cold, but you're all right.”
“Cold? I'm more than cold. I'm turning into a damn popsicle.”
“Well, it's too late now, isn't it?” I heard him let out a small chuckle deep inside of my head.

In this scene, Juliana is on the way to meet her best friend, Amelia, at a small cafe. Along the way, she is thinking about her life and the obstacles she faces.

Being home to over 750,000 people, I discovered that getting lost inside of a big city such as Charlotte was nearly effortless. Lost was precisely what I wanted to be; far away from all of the enthusiastic couples on the street holding hands as they prepared for tonight. I couldn't help but question whether or not their smiles were real. Will they go home and argue? Maybe they were keeping secrets from the rest of the world that they hoped no one would find out. Were they like me? Why couldn't I be as fortunate as they seemed to be? Why couldn't I be normal?

In this snippet, Juliana is waiting on her abusive, alcoholic fiancé James to come home for their New Year's celebration she had planned. He had promised her they would celebrate together, but as usual he has ruined her plans.

"With every minute that passed, my heart sank deeper into my chest. He should have been back by now. I do not know why I trusted him when he said he would come home in time. I knew that I shouldn't be surprised. The hands on the clock quickly turned to midnight. I rang in the New Year alone, sitting on my love seat watching as the happy couples filled the television screen with their overly long make out sessions. I put a noise maker to my mouth and slowly blew into it. The sound it emitted was the saddest, most pathetic noise I had ever heard."

8 Sentence Sunday

Thanks for stopping by to check out my writing! This week I am introducing my current WIP. It is from a book that I titled, "The Willow". Today's excerpt is a part of the Weekend Writing Warriors meme (also known as 8 Sentence Sunday).

This is the opening scene of the story, where the main character, Juliana Piper, is introduced and talking about the recent passing of her mother and the struggle of dealing with her feelings regarding her death.

"When some people mourn the death of a loved one, they can just let it all go. They accept whatever happened and move on with their life. Not even bother with the whole mess of mourning and grief. Only, for me... well, I do not think I can let death go that easily. The passing of my mother nearly a year ago took from me this place that I called my home. It was now forever broken, and I felt as though nothing in this world could spin right again. For people like me, the hurt was electrifying and inside your heart breaks a little more with each passing day. If you have never felt that pain, consider yourself lucky."
